Research For Music Video- Mulvey's Theory

Representation - Gender is one of the more  obvious representations in music videos.

Laura Mulvey claims that we live in a patriarchal society, where women are seen as sexual objects ans the men he predators.

A particular genres that represent this idea is Hip Hop and Rap Culture.
Within this genre Mulvey also discusses the idea that women are 'Dismembered' in all forms of media - that thee is a focus, not on women as a whole, but a focus on parts of their body ( their body is dismembered), and men are shown as a whole.

This also creates the male gaze.  The concept of gaze is one that deals with how an audience views the people presented. How men look at women, How women look at themselves How women look at other women.

However these female artist do try to challenge this,

Adele is one of the artist that focus solely on their voice as a pose to image and falling under the category of being 'dismembered'.

Missy Eliot is a controversial artist, that attempts to challenge theories.

Emile Sande also does not follow the representation women are expected to portray in a patriarchal society, but instead challenges it.
