As you can see from the reaction in the cinema, the reaction
was quite positive. This may be due to the target audience effect in which the
genre for electronic is around 16-18 year old's. I have learned that synergy is
very important in music videos, most of the comments we got were focused on our
main artists wild hair, which is seen as “iconic”. This in my opinion was the
most successful part of our music video, as we didn’t expect the audience to
recognize and identify the hair of our main artist (Erik), he is only given a
small amount of screen time. Our artist Erik walked around college with a cap
on every day so hardly anyone saw his hair until this point.
There were
also other things that they liked about the video such as the filtering effects
and the camera movements mentioned in the video. This comment has helped me to
understand why we research a lot of theory about music videos and why we spend
a lot of time listening to the teacher telling us about Final Cut Pro
skills/tutorials. If I was to make any potential changes, I would have used
more sophisticated edits within the video to make it sharper. I feel that we
left everything to the last week so we didn’t get to show our full potential.
I also got feedback from my sister who is currently studying Media Studies at degree level. There were balanced comments both positive and negative. I realized we had a lighting problem when we were shooting the video in the park location. We were meant to film just before sunset but it went very dark quickly and we didn’t get the time to film there again. On potential changes, I think creating and planning a better filming schedule, such as including more filming days would have improved our video in terms of quality. I don’t think I would have changed anything on my ancillary work, I think that keeping it simple was the key to catch the audiences’ eye. I kept it simple by not using too much information on the advert or cramming in random icons that weren’t necessary.
Audience feedback is important as they help to point out mistakes that we don't recognize. Another example would be from our rough cut, which was shown to the class which had a mixed reaction. Some people said it was good in terms of the use of shots/movement and some said that the jump cuts didn't make any sense to the story within the lyrics. Our teacher agreed with the comments our peers made in class and advised us to have another day of filming in which we did. We altered to change everything due to the feedback we had and it had a big difference, it came out more positive in the end. We had more positive feedback from our final video than the rough cut which makes our hard work feel great.
Going back to Evaluation Question 2, I have created a survey using "Survey Monkey" to ask for feedback on how effectively I have used synergy in my products. I thought it would be relevant to this question as it is still audience feedback and there were many things that I've learnt from it. One thing I learned was that not everybody will like my product, there are diverse people in our college in which not all of them like the electronic genre. Some will listen to Hip-Hop or Rap music more than electronic so their opinion on my video will be mixed. One of the comments were "I don't like electronic music but your video/ancillary work showed conventions which were great". Despite the person not liking electronic music, they still found my video enjoyable to watch. Many people recognized the synergy links between my ancillary work and suggested that to improve the effectiveness of it, I should of included more shots of the artist in the music video. This would of been one of my priorities if I was to remake the video. The screen shot below is taken from Evaluation Question 2.
Despite getting feedback from my peers who are from my target audience group, all the feedback was positive and got no real negative feedback. Twitter would be an example in which I posted my ancillary work on it asking for feedback, with only a few people responding with one worded answers which was a bit disappointing. This feedback I feel wasn't useful as my peers probably wanted to be nice to me rather than say that my ancillary work was rubbish. This meant that I couldn't reflect on the negatives of my ancillary work properly. Most of the people i've asked to feedback on my work were mainly media students because when I asked the general public, none of them seem interested and didn't have a clue about what the conventions are for the ancillary products or what synergy is, even when I explained it to them. Therefore, the feedback I got from the general public were useless. However, speaking of the positives, most of my peers liked the way I used and followed the conventions of the digipak and advertisement. Such as the way the title was positioned and the use of colour.
