The Andrew Goodwin theory suggests that there are characteristics that makes a music video successful. He suggests that there are relationships between two things, these are the lyrics and the visuals presented in the music video. The visual usually either illustrates, extends or contradicts the lyrics.
One example is a song called "Price Tag" by Jessie J in which she says "Its not about the money, money, money" whilst the video shows Jessie J standing in front of a tree which has lots of money on it. This shows how the visuals of the music video contradicts the lyrics.
This research would be useful for me as I will look to use these tips to create my music video, such as making sure there is a link between the lyrics and the visuals.

Rethinking Narrative Analysis
Andrew Goodwin stated that there are three ways in which a music video can connect back to its song, these are
- Illustration - This is in which a music video shows literal meaning to the songs lyrics but in visual form, for example, Lily Allen - "The Fear" in which when she says "I look at the sun", it is shown that she actually looks up at the sun.
- Amplification - This occurs when the visuals introduce extra meaning on top of the lyrics itself but it does not contradicts the lyrics. It adds extra story to the lyrics. One example is Kanye West "Coming home", the artist says "Tell the world I'm coming home" but the music video shows the artist walking around in an unknown empty place.
- Disjuncture - This is where the music video intentionally ignores the content of the lyrics and genre of the song to create a whole new meaning. It usually contradicts the lyrics. The music video makes no sense what so ever compared to the lyrics. One example is "Bad romance", a song created by Lady Gaga. The video is has weird dance routines and has no relation to the word "Bad romance".
