Research - Analysing costume, props and location in music videos.

Costumes

There are links between genre and costumes seen in music videos. They usually establish the theme of the song for example it would be silly to have someone wearing a halloween party suit in a opera type song.

One direction is a great example as they create Pop genre type of music. Pop music are linked to a "party" theme in which there is a lot of upbeat tempo to the song. They are wearing modern day to day bright clothes (what teenagers wear) of chinos, checkered shirts ect. There is a lot of movement in the video (dancing and partying) in which creates more excitement and a pop theme feel to it. The costumes do link to the theme in which they are at a beach having fun dancing around.

Another example is Ariana Grande - The way which is a Pop/RnB song. There is a party theme to it in which there are props used to demonstrate this such as balloons flying around and people dancing to the music. We are shown that the artist is wearing a dress as this links to the genre as a dress is usually worn during parties. It would be unusual to see props such as guns, drugs or violence in a Pop/RnB type of music. The location does link to the genre as it is seen that it is set in a small studio which there is a party going on.

Now lets look at an example of another genre. The genre here is grime in which the lyrics are different, it is more violent and has crime relation to it. An example is Roll Deep "When im ere" in which in the music video, the artist is presented as more serious. The costumes are different to pop videos, in which they are all wearing hoodies to show the theme of grime.

One last example is in which a rapper called "Morrison" raps about selling drugs, having guns and making money. The artist here is also shown as serious rather than dancing around as shown in pop videos. The lyrics are violent and is crime related. The props in the video used are money which relates to the lyrics of his song.
