Moreover, the song that the video is set to is the foundation. Everything must be built around the meaning of the song ... or does it? Here are three types of relations between songs and videos:
'La La La' by Naughty Boy is a song about people hurting your feelings to the extent that you have to blur them out by covering your ears ... the same way that is often associated with children who do not want to hear something.
The video itself however is based upon a Bolivian legend where a demon curses miners and a deaf boy is able to overpower him because he could not hear its hearing and his voice was louder than his.
The video is modern and gives a nod to 'The Wizard of Oz', but it retells the Bolivian legend. It does not feature Sam Smith or Naughty Boy in the video but the boy does mime the catchy chorus in one scene.
However the lyrics and the video are unrelated and so this video is a Disjuncture relation.
Taylor Swift's 'We Are Never Getting Back Together' is all about breaking up with someone and ... I hope you get the point.
The video's concept is very down to the point of the song's meaning and is complimented by cheesy dance routines that also enforce Miss. Swift's dismissive attitude to a previous suitor.
I deem this an Illustration relation.
Kanye West's stronger is all about overcoming the people who hate on you. Kanye West, especially, gets a lot criticism by the media for his energetic and explicit behavior and so this is somewhat his anthem to address all of those people. Their hate makes him stronger.
The video is very direct in the way he looks and sings to the camera. The video and the song features Daft Punk who are associated with their robot image and futuristic, electronic music. This links with the Japanese iconography as the Japanese are famous for revolutionary gadgets and technology. With all this in mind, the video adds another layer to Kanye West's song as they all promote evolution and enhancement.
It would be fitting to say that this is an Amplification relation.
